Playa del Carmen has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean, and efforts have been made to make it more convenient and a lot easier for tourists to get there.
Tourists from other countries who come to the city usually arrive by plane. They disembark either at the International Airport in Cozumel or at the Cancun International Airport. While the city in fact has its own airport, it is somewhat small and is primarily used by smaller aircrafts for short flights between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel or nearby ruins. In order to make the most out of your trip to the enchanting Playa del Carmen, plan your travel and transfer arrangements early.
From within Mexico, tourists typically usually just ride the bus, rent a car, or take a cab. Travelers going to the city via Cancun have a number of travel options: via a taxi, a private airport transfer, a direct bus to the city, or a 10-person colectivo van. It normally takes about 45 minutes to reach Playa del Carmen from Cancun.
If you are coming from Cozumel, you will have to ride a cab at the airport and tell the driver to take you at the dock where you can get a ferry ride. Ferries leave for Playa del Carmen every hour. Travel time is about 30 minutes. Once you reach the dock in the city, there will be buses, tricycles, and taxi cabs that you can ride to get to your accommodation.
