Getting around and exploring Playa del Carmen’s hidden gems is quite easy when you have arrived at this sparkling city. If you arrive by plane, you will land at the Cancun International Airport, which provides you with a number of choices to get to Playa del Carmen such as private owned shuttles, taxis, and public buses.
The most cost-effective way to get around Playa del Carmen is by bus. Suburban vans and local buses, that carry holiday tourists as well as their luggage comfortably, travel from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and back everyday on a regular basis. Long-distance buses connect Cancun with Merida, all major cities on the Yucatan Peninsula, the Gulf Coast, Chiapas, and Mexico City.
A great alternative to buses is what locals call colectivos. These suburban vans are painted white and offer you excellent value for your money. Each van carries up to 20 people comfortably, including their luggage, for only a few dollars each.
The number of passengers depends on the model of the bus, the driver however may fit many more than that. Getting around Playa del Carmen by colectivos will not be a good idea if you get uneasy with very little personal space. The transport service is not that reliable past midnight. You can board these vehicles from their base near the stations at both Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
